NFT system (Nutrient Film Technique)

Continuous flow of nutrients in a thin layer – for efficient cultivation of leafy vegetables

The NFT system is popular with lettuce and herb growers because it allows for a continuous supply of nutrients and oxygen to the roots using thin layers of flowing solution . It is great for indoors, on balconies and in grow towers.

🔧 Operating principle:

  • The plants are planted in holes in a slightly tilted PVC pipe .
  • The lower part of the roots hangs freely in the cavity of the tube – it does not touch the bottom, but is still moist .
  • A nutrient solution is pumped from the tank into the upper part of the pipe using a low-power pump .
  • The solution slowly flows through the tube as a thin "film" - that is, a very shallow layer.
  • On the other side of the pipe, the excess solution returns back to the tank → closed recirculation circuit .
  • The roots thus have constant access to water, nutrients and air - ideal conditions for rapid growth.

🧰 What you need:

  • 1–2 m PVC pipe (⌀ 75–100 mm), slightly inclined
  • A container for live solution (e.g. 20–30l box)
  • Submersible pump (low flow approx. 200–400 l/h)
  • Water distribution hose
  • Holes for growing cups (every 15–20 cm)
  • Growing medium (expanded clay, rockwool)
  • Baskets + seedlings

🛠️ Step by step instructions:

  1. Drill holes in the tube (⌀ for the cupcake), approximately every 15–20 cm.
  2. Place the tube at a slight slope (approx. 3–5%) so that the solution can drain naturally.
  3. Connect one end to the pump with the supply hose , which you place in the tank.
  4. At the other end of the pipe, make a drain back into the tank.
  5. Insert the baskets with seedlings and growing medium into the holes .
  6. Fill the tank with nutrient solution and turn on the pump – watch as the solution flows gently through the tube.
  7. Regularly checks water level, pH and EC.

✅ Advantages of the NFT system:

  • Constant supply of nutrients and oxygen
  • Low water and energy consumption
  • Perfect for salads, arugula, basil, coriander
  • Easy maintenance and solution recycling

❗ Extra tip:

  • Not suitable for heavy or deep-rooted plants (e.g. tomatoes, peppers)
  • Make sure the water flow is even – avoid stagnation
  • Keep your pipes clean – you prevent algae and biofilm growth
