The short method – the simplest passive system

The Kratky method is the easiest way to grow plants hydroponically without electricity, pumps or moving parts . It is ideal for beginners, small households or as a school project.

🔧 Operating principle:

• The plant is planted in a basket , which is inserted into the lid of a container (e.g. a bucket or box).
• The roots extend from the basket down into the container with the nutrient solution.
• The solution level is set just below the basket , so that the lower part of the roots is in water, while the upper part has access to air.
• As the plant consumes water and nutrients, the solution level naturally drops – this increases the “air zone” around the roots and provides oxygenation without the need for an aeration stone .
• The plant "takes" what it needs - water, nutrients and oxygen - at the right time and in the right amount.

💡 What is important to follow:

• Opaque container – prevents algae growth and protects roots from light.
• The correct initial amount of water – the level should be approximately 2–3 cm below the basket.
• Balanced nutrient solution – provides the plant with everything it needs for the entire growth cycle.
• Grow light plants – lettuce, herbs or baby spinach are ideal.

• Zero electricity consumption
• Minimal costs (you can even use an old bucket)
• Simple setup and operation
• A great method for testing home hydroponics

❗ Restrictions:

• It is not suitable for fruit plants (tomatoes, peppers) - they need more nutrients and oxygen.
• After the solution runs out, the system needs to be refilled or restarted – it is not recirculating.
• It works best at a water temperature between 18–24°C.

What you need:

• Opaque container (e.g. plastic bucket with lid)
• Growing basket
• Expanded clay or rockwool
• Nutrient solution

Procedure:

• Drill a hole in the lid for the growing basket.
• Place the plant in a basket with expanded clay.
• Pour the live solution into the container (2–3 cm below the cup).
• Close the lid and place in the light.
