Ebb & Flow (flooding system)

💧 How the DWC system works – deep water hydroponics with oxygenated water

DWC (Deep Water Culture) is one of the most popular forms of hydroponics, ideal for beginners and advanced growers alike. Compared to the passive Kratky method, water oxygenation plays a major role, making plants grow faster, stronger and healthier .

🔧 Operating principle:

  • Plants are placed in baskets that are suspended above a container with nutrient solution – most often with a lid.
  • The roots are freely immersed in water , which contains everything they need: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other micronutrients.
  • There is an air stone (aerator) in the tank connected to an air motor - it constantly blows air into the water.
  • Thanks to the bubbles, the solution is constantly oxygenated , which ensures that the roots do not "suffocate" and have enough oxygen for healthy growth.
  • The plant can continuously receive water, nutrients and oxygen at the same time - without interruption or stress.

📦 What the system needs:

  • Opaque container (to prevent algae from forming)
  • Air stone (same as for aquariums)
  • Air pump + hose
  • Pots and growing medium (e.g. expanded clay)
  • Nutrient solution prepared according to instructions

✅ Advantages of the DWC system:

  • Rapid plant growth due to constant access to oxygen and nutrients
  • Also suitable for fruiting vegetables - tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers
  • Easy monitoring of water level and root condition
  • Possibility of growing larger plants with the right settings

❗ What to watch out for:

  • Stable water temperature – ideally 18–22 °C. Water that is too warm = less oxygen = risk of rot.
  • pH and EC – measure and adjust every few days to maintain ideal conditions.
  • Power supply – if the power goes out, the water will not oxygenate. Plants can handle it in the short term, but longer outages can be a problem.

🧪 Who is DWC ideal for?

  • For everyone who wants to easily grow even larger plants
  • For homes and schools
  • For anyone who has access to electricity and wants an efficient solution

What you need:

  • Two containers (growing + reservoir)
  • Pump with timer
  • Substrate (expanded clay), cups
  • Nutrient solution

Procedure:

  • Connect the pump to the growing container with expanded clay.
  • Set a time for regular flooding.
  • After switching off, the water returns automatically.

✅ Suitable for: tomatoes, peppers, fruiting vegetables
⏱️ Ideal if you have a timer
