Bioponics
Bioponics: When nature and technology come together – grow purely with organic fertilizers and a biofilter
If you love vegetables without chemicals and are also attracted to hydroponics, we have great news for you - there is a way to grow "organically" without soil . Meet bioponics , a gentle and natural variant of hydroponics that uses organic fertilizers with organic certification. And what's more? Thanks to special biofilters, you can do it at home!
What is bioponics?
Bioponics is like the little sister of hydroponics, which loves everything natural. While classic hydroponics uses mineral nutrients, bioponics relies on 100% organic fertilizers that come from natural sources - seaweed, compost, plant extracts or fermented substances.
Unlike regular hydroponics, however, organic nutrition needs a slightly different approach to make it available to plants – and that’s where a biofilter comes into play!
Organic fertilizers from Terra Aquatica: certified and functional
Terra Aquatica (formerly GHE Europe) is known worldwide as a pioneer in sustainable growing and hydroponics. Their organic range of certified organic fertilizers allows you to grow bioponically with a clear conscience - even according to ecological standards.
Fertilizers like Pro Organic Grow & Bloom (formerly BioSevia) were designed specifically for hydroponic systems and have:
- 🌱 Certification for organic farming (e.g. Ecocert)
- 🌱 Composition full of fermented plant extracts and microorganisms
- 🌱 Great compatibility with biofilters that ensure the release of nutrients
What is a biofilter for and why do you need it?
Microorganisms play a major role in bioponics – and the biofilter is their kingdom. It functions as a “living space” for colonies of beneficial bacteria that:
- 🔄 They convert organic nutrients into forms that are easily absorbed by plants
- 🧪 They stabilize pH and help maintain a clean and balanced solution
- 🛡️ Prevents the growth of harmful bacteria thanks to a natural balance
In short: without a biofilter, organic fertilizer in hydroponics would remain unnecessarily unused . However, with a biofilter, it forms a harmonious tandem that functions as a natural laboratory right in your tank.
Benefits of bioponics at home
You can also run bioponics on your balcony or in your kitchen. There are more than enough advantages:
- 🌿 You grow completely without chemicals - ideal for organic enthusiasts
- 🚿 Low water consumption (same as hydroponics)
- 🍅 More flavorful and natural fruits
- 🐛 Increased plant resistance thanks to natural microbial balance
- 🧼 Easy maintenance – just clean the filter regularly and add water
Where to get a biofilter?
Two options:
- Buy a ready-made biofilter – In our e-shop we offer a biofiltration unit that works with organic fertilizers from Terra Aquatica. Easy installation, long service life, and most importantly – functional results proven in practice.
How to make a biofilter at home
You can easily make your own biofilter for home bioponics. Follow these steps:
What you will need:
- A container with a lid – ideally plastic or glass, at least 3–5 liters in volume
- Air stone and pump – ensure water movement and oxygen supply
- Biofiltration medium – ceramic rings, bio balls, foam cubes or pumice (the larger the surface area for bacteria, the better)
- Mesh or basket – to separate the medium from the free space in the tank
Procedure:
- Place bio medium, such as ceramic rings or bio balls, in the container .
- Introduce air supply using a pump and air stone to aerate the medium.
- Let the system run for at least 5-7 days to allow beneficial bacteria to settle in the medium.
- Connect the filter to your hydroponic system – preferably to the part where water recirculation occurs.
- Regularly rinse the medium with chlorine-free water , but do not sterilize it - this will preserve the beneficial microorganisms.
Summary: Bioponics – natural cultivation without soil
- ✅ Organic fertilizers with bio certification from Terra Aquatica
- ✅ Special biofilter for nutrient decomposition
- ✅ Great taste, lower ecological footprint
- ✅ Possibility of growing at home, in the apartment and on the balcony
Growing without soil is no longer the preserve of technocrats and laboratories. Thanks to bioponics, you can combine the best of both worlds – modern technology and the power of nature. So, will you give green growing a new dimension?
